چکیده
Six sheep fitted with ruminal fistulas were used in a repeated measurement design with two 24-d periods to investigate the effect of adding a specific mixture of essential oils (MEO) at 0 (control), 0.8 and 1.6 ml/d on apparent nutrient digestibility, rumen fermentation characteristics, rumen microbial population and blood chemical metabolites. Animals were fed with a 50:50 alfalfa hay: concentrate diet. Ruminal pH, total VFA concentration, molar proportion of individual VFA (acetate, propionate, butyrate, iso-valerate), acetate: propionate ratio and methane production were not affected with MEO. Small peptides plus amino acid nitrogen and large peptides nitrogen concentration in rumen fluid were not affected with MEO supplementation relative to those of the control; while, rumen fluid ammonia nitrogen concentration at 0 and 6 h after morning feeding in sheep fed with 1.6 ml/d of MEO was lower (P < 0.05) compared to those fed with control and 0.8 ml/d of MEO. At 0 h after morning feeding, ammonia nitrogen concentration was higher (P < 0.05) in sheep fed with 0.8 ml/d of MEO relative to that fed with 1.6 ml/d of MEO and control diet. Ruminal protozoa and hyper ammonia producing (HAP) bacteria counts were not affected by addition of MEO in the diet. For evaluated blood cells and metabolites in sheep fed diet supplemented with MEO relative to those fed the control, no changes were observed in red blood cells, white blood cell, hemoglobin, hematocrit, glucose, BHBA, cholesterol, total protein, albumin, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and AST and ALT concentration. Apparent total tract digestibility of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), organic matter (OM) and nuteral detergent fiber (NDF) were not influenced by MEO supplementation. The results of the present study suggested that supplementation of MEO may have limited effects on apparent nutrient digestibility, ruminal fermentation and protozoa and HAP bacteria count, blood cells and metabolites.

Effects of Thyme Essential Oil and Disodium Fumarate on Ruminal Fermentation Characteristics, Microbial Population and Nutrient Flow in a Dual Flow Continuous Culture System
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of di-sodium fumarate (DSF) and thyme essential oil (TEO) solely and simultaneously on ruminal fermentation properties and microbial abundance. A dual-flow continuous culture system (DFCC) with eight 1400-mL fermenters was used in a period of 12 d that divided to 9 d for adaptation and 3 d for sampling. Fermenters were fed 100 g d...
متن کاملPeppermint and Pennyroyal Essential Oil Effect on Performance, Rumen Microbial Population and Some Blood Parameters of Sheep
BACKGROUND: The use of antibiotics as feed additive in animal feeds due to the appearance of residues in milk and meat and their effects on human health has restricted. Two of essential oils with high potential for use in ruminant diet are Mentha piperita (peppermint) and Mentha pulegium (pennyroyal) essential oil. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of essential oils...
متن کاملEffects of Sodium Bentonite on Blood Parameters, Feed Digestibility and Rumen Fermentation Parameters of Male Balouchi Sheep Fed Diet Contaminated by Diazinon, an Organophosphate Pesticide
The remnants of pesticides in livestock feeds have been increased by excessive using of these pesticides so as to meet extreme demands for more feeds. Finding a new strategy for reducing pesticides negative effects is absolutely necessary. Therefore, evaluation of the effects of sodium bentonite on blood parameters, feed digestibility and rumen fermentation parameters in sheep fed diets contami...
متن کاملMethane Inhibition Alters the Microbial Community, Hydrogen Flow, and Fermentation Response in the Rumen of Cattle
Management of metabolic hydrogen ([H]) in the rumen has been identified as an important consideration when reducing ruminant CH4 emissions. However, little is known about hydrogen flux and microbial rumen population responses to CH4 inhibition when animals are fed with slowly degradable diets. The effects of the anti-methanogenic compound, chloroform, on rumen fermentation, microbial ecology, a...

The effect of essential oils (EO) of medical plant seeds and spices on rumen microbial fermentation of alfalfa hay, sugar beet pulp and barley grain (as substrate) were evaluated under in vitro conditions. In vitro incubations were carried out using the gas production method with glass syringes. Treatments were as follows; a control (no additive), monensin, EO of cinnamon, black pepper seed, cu...
